Images of Diana have been found throughout the Greek islands, in Northern Africa, on the European Continent and in the British Isles. Widely known in witchcraft lore, Belladonna means "beautiful lady" in various romance languages. As an herb, belladonna can be used for banishing and removing baleful influences. Handle with care, as it can be toxic. In America, the native bittersweet or nightshade often takes the place of belladonna. American nightshade has five-pointed purple or white flowers, which may represent the cardinal elements. Its berries are red or black. Nightshade is related to some edible plants including tomatoes, eggplant and the potato. However, nightshade is not directly related to the European plant, belladonna.

However, some folks who live on the Eastern Seaboard of the USA or the shores of Lake Michigan may switch East and West, summoning or invoking Water in the East. The Chinese system of elements includes Water, Earth, Fire, Metal, and Wood. Some Pagan traditions include a fifth element of Spirit, found in the center, above or below. The Watchtowers or Guardians of the directions were used by the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, who may have borrowed them from Medieval ceremonial magicians. Elemental beings honored by the Hermetic traditions include Air: Sylphs; Fire: Salamanders; Water: Undines; and Earth: Gnomes. The elements correspond with the four suits of the Tarot and the "weapons" or symbols of ceremonial magick, including Chalices or Cups, Coins or Pentacles, Swords and Wands.
